What is the black piece on a 98 Saturn air conditioing lever?

I need to know what the black piece on the air conditiong lever is. I was told the thing that moves the temperature for the air conditioning is called a lever but there is a black piece on it and I need ot find out what it's called and where I can get it if possible.
